A thin half footplate slides under the front part of the foot and leaves the toes free, so the ball of the foot can still bend, while the curved strut that runs up the outer side of the ankle holds the front of the foot in a level position. Inside the shell there is an air cushion: squeeze the bulb to fill it, and press the small metal valve set into the recessed panel on the front of the strut to let the air back out, so the fit is set by air rather than by pulling a strap tighter. A round buckle sits on each side of the calf cuff with a short velcro strap between them, and both buckles open so the brace comes on and off without unthreading anything. A row of slots along the top edge of the cuff eases the load at the top of the calf, and soft black felt lines the edges that meet the skin. The footplate is slim enough to sit inside an ordinary shoe, so there is no need for a larger size of footwear. The brace is made from nylon, polyester, polyurethane and polypropylene, and each brace weighs about 201 g.
